Stop Whitehead Oil Terminal NEWSFLASH

The Stop Whitehead Oil Terminal (SWOT) campaign was formed to oppose plans to create a major fossil fuel import and distribution facility at Cloghan Point, near Whitehead. We are at the start of an exciting new phase of the campaign, and we remain very hopeful that we can prevent this development.

On 27 June we took our first step to initiate legal action with fantastic support from PILS Project (Public Interest Litigation Support Northern Ireland).  An application was lodged to request a Judicial Review to challenge the Department of Infrastructure’s failure to ‘call in’ the planning application, given its regional significance.  This case is being taken by SWOT member, Clodagh Miskelly, a local resident of Whitehead.

In the last few days, we have seen judgments in two significant environmental campaigns taking legal challenges to stop fossil fuel infrastructure. They both won. Sarah Finch’s case against Surrey County Council (20th June) and, of course, the fantastic No Gas Caverns campaign (17 June) by our neighbours in Islandmagee. Huge congratulations to them! We know from these campaigns that legal action can work, and we can build on their success. Legal action can be a long journey and we need to raise money to fight. We will be launching an online fundraiser in the Summer.

How you can help

People power works. Just look at the success of the Islandmagee community in stopping the Gas Caverns. We need more people to help us fight this. You could take one single action, or you might choose to get more involved. You could take photos of wildlife for us; fundraise locally, like having a sponsored swim; or tell everyone about the campaign. You could join the SWOT campaign.

Come to the public campaign meeting

A public meeting about the campaign will take place on Tuesday 16 July 2024 at 7pm, at the Whitehead Community Centre. Everyone is very welcome to attend. Please come along to find out more about SWOT and our next steps in the campaign.
