About

Last year the High Court quashed planning permission for the development of a major fossil fuel import and export distribution facility at a peaceful, rural and coastal location near Whitehead. This followed legal action by Stop Whitehead Oil Terminal (SWOT) supported by the PILS Project. We got a stay of execution but we still need to stop the development.

A revised application for this unnecessary and unwanted fossil fuel infrastructure is now with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

We are hopeful that we can Stop Whitehead Oil Terminal but we need your help.

Stop Whitehead Oil Terminal wants the Council to refuse planning permission because this development is not in the public interest.

We oppose this development because:

We need to stop using fossil fuels, so we can combat climate change

Our marine ecosystem is at risk in Belfast Lough and neighbouring coastal areas

The development will create water, noise, air, light and odour pollution and the risk of oil spills

There is no strategic need as Northern Ireland already has four oil terminals

It would lead to heavy traffic - almost 100,000 extra HGV road tanker journeys on the A2 & beyond every year

The increased pollution and traffic would create risks to health and wellbeing

And would have a negative impact on the tourism economy.
